Arlanza (Yard No. 415) was launched by Harland & Wolff in Belfast in 1911 for the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company. The vessel was intended for the company’s South American passenger and mail service. This was a record breaking year for Harland & Wolff, launching ten vessels with an aggregate tonnage of 118,209 tons and total horse-power of 97,000 ~ the greatest horse power of any one year for a single firm. The ten vessels launched during this record year included the White Star liner Titanic (No. 401) with a tonnage of 46,328 and the Royal Mail Steam Packet liners Arlanza (Yard No. 415), Descado (Yard No. 420) and Demerara (Yard No. 425). There were three others each with tonnage exceeding 11,000. One the new ships, Patriotic (Yard No. 424), built for the Belfast Steamship Company, had a remarkable horse-power of 6,100.
